The Warren Central girls lacrosse team performed well throughout the entire season and currently stand at twentieth in the state rankings. The girls managed to finish the regular season with an impressive 7-6 record.

“I think our season was an overall success. We really improved and found out what exactly we needed to work on, especially in the up and coming seasons. We have definitely improved more this year [than] any other year before, mastering the basics before really getting into more advanced techniques. Our team really pushed themselves to become better each and everyday, which was clearly shown in our performance,” junior Rebecca Clark said.

On April 29, the girls dominated Brownsburg with a score of 15-7, before losing to fifteenth ranked Park Tudor 17-4. Fortunately for the girls, they managed to bounce back and defeat the 29th ranked MIC rival Center Grove in a tight game with a score of 11-8.

The girls concluded their regular season with a tough loss to fourteenth ranked Fishers 14-5; however, the Warriors do not believe the score was a true representation of the game played. They feel as if they were in the game with a chance to win the majority of it, before ultimately losing.

“I think the team tried very hard in the game against Fishers. We definitely did some good things throughout the game and I feel like if we just pushed ourselves a bit harder then I think we could have come away with the win,” junior Anna-Marie Collins said.

The Warriors moved into the MIC tournament after ending their regular season on a loss, but kept their heads held high. The team was unlucky in drawing the number two team in state, Carmel, for the first game, but still felt confident in their abilities to keep up with the lacrosse powerhouse. Unfortunately, the team fell to Carmel 16-2, but managed to defeat North Central in the consolation round to place 3rd.

“The team played great games that day of MIC. It had us on our toes playing Carmel because at the time they were no. 2 and we just wanted to show we were able to hold our own that whole game. We had already played Center Grove and came out with the win so we were very confident about North Central,” senior Chyna Jackson said.

The girls then advance to sectionals, yet again continuing their positive mentality. In the first round, they encountered the no. 9 team in Evansville Memorial, a team they had previously lost to earlier in the season. Unfortunately for the girls, the loss repeated itself as they fell 13-6 to the tigers, effectively ending their season.

“For sectionals, we faced Evansville memorial, who we saw at an earlier time in our season. With us already knowing what to expect from them, we were pretty confident that we would do much better and that alone made us play hard,” senior Kenaya Griffin said.

While the season ended a bit too abruptly for the Warriors liking, they still are proud of how they performed this season, which was a big improvement from last year’s 3-12 record. The girls also had to overcome several obstacles throughout the season, including becoming more accustomed with one another and adapting to each others’ playing style.

“Throughout the season, I feel like we continued to improve as the season progressed, and considering a large number of our athletes had never played lacrosse before high school, some never before this year, I think we [performed] really well overall,” junior Sara Burton said.

Now that this season has passed, the girls are already looking forward to next season and setting high expectations.

“I think the team will be really good next year. We have some great people with some amazing skills and I think the team will hopefully be an even bigger improvement than the team this year was,” Collins said.
